While New Soccer games are primarily for fun and to include everyone, they
can also improve a variety of specific skills. The basics of dribbling,
kicking, and heading are demonstrated to help get players started. Games
are presented that develop these skills along with team building. New Soccer
games can be played on a grassy area or soft surface and require only a
ball and markers. Games are for 2 to 16 players. After the games are demonstrated,
the most common fouls are shown to facilitate the next step, a modified
game.

Reviewed in Video Rating Guide for Libraries: Rating: Four starsNEW SOCCER (FOR FUN & SKILLS)Live action. Producer: Dale N. Le Fevre. Director: Oleg Harencar. Narrator: Darwin Dallas. Music Director: Jim Rote. Produced by and available from New Games. Copyright 1993. 21 min. Color. Stereo. Also available in PAL and SECAM. $29.95, home use. Guide. AUDIENCE: General New Soccer presents some basic drills aimed at developing the fundamental skills needed in the game of soccer. The video is good for anyone wanting to organize a practice or learn some fun, recreational uses of a soccer ball with just a few people. The video is divided into three sections designed to improve the skills of dribbling, kicking, and teamwork. In each section, four drills are demonstrated. The concept behind the drill is explained as well as how to organize the drill. However, this is not an instructional video on how to kick, shoot or dribble. It shows some drills primarily organized to develop these skills. The only equipment necessary for any of these activities is a soccer ball and some cones or markers. The participants shown in the drills are various-aged elementary schoolchildren. The video uses only one camera and is narrated by soccer coach Darwin Dallas. The production contains mostly wide shots of the kids performing the drills. Along with explaining the different drills, Dallas also shows the various penalties that can be called in soccer. Overall, this video provides a good variety of drills that can be done for leisure or that can easily be incorporated into an organized practice. Kids and adults new to the sport could gain something from this video. However, the ideal viewer would probably be the parent who volunteered to help coach the grade school soccer team but isn't quite sure how to organize practice time with some relevant drills. -Mark Learman * * Reviewed in the School Library Journal, April, 1994: NEW SOCCER FOR FUN & SKILLS Videocassette. Color. 21 min. with brochure. New Games. 1993 release. $29.95. Gr 3 Up - Following a one-minute commercial pitching other related products, New Soccer for Fun & Skills presents "new soccer" drills and games. These teaching/training activities do not require shin guards and can be played on any convenient grassy area or soft surface. Boys and girls together demonstrate drills and games emphasizing that these soccer-based activities are designed for all. After introductory demonstrations of simple soccer basics - dribbling, kicking and heading - the video consists of demonstrations showing various games for improving fundamentals such as dribbling (dribble tag, take-away, collect eggs, chase, 1 vs. 1); kicking (hit the cone, marbles scramble, shoot); and teamwork games (keep away, 2 vs. 2, 3 vs. 2, use your head, and 3 vs. 3 vs. 3). Following these game demos, illegal actions or common fouls including tripping, kicking, violent charge, holding, pushing, handball, obstruction and dangerous play are described and demonstrated. The video moves between on-screen coach Darwin Dallas providing information and a variety of elementary age children demonstrating new soccer games and drills. This low key presentation should be useful not only as supplemental information for coaches of beginning soccer players, but also for young players themselves and/or their non-aficionado teachers. A useful addition to elementary and middle school media center collections. -Burton H. Brooks, Michigan Association for Media in Education, Grand Haven * * Reviewed in Billboard, December 4, 1993: NEW SOCCER FOR FUN & SKILLS New Games/Dale N. Le Fevre (707-937-3337), approximately 25 minutes, $29.95. A little while back, Dale Le Fevre produced a video titled "New Games" that presented some 30 cooperative activities aimed at providing entertainment as well as building skills in areas such as trust, teamwork, and confidence. "New Soccer" follows much the same formula, but is centered solely on the game of soccer and thus requires a specific interest, a ball, and a little more space. The focus here is on kicking and balancing games, which can be played by two to 16 players outdoors or on a carpeted surface. Target audience is teachers, coaches, and players. back to top of page |
