"The combination of video and its accompanying brochure will make it possible for someone with minimal carpentry skills to assemble what is needed; many of the materials can be recycled wood, rope and bolts. For a library with videos for recreation, this is a natural. There are ingenious and inexpensive games here for any number of locations and ages. The message comes across and the viewer easily focuses on the goal of having fun in groups or as individuals choosing, building, and playing these outdoor games." -Edward A. Reviewed in Video Rating Guide for Libraries: Rating: Three starsSUNNY DAY GAMES (YOU CAN MAKE)Live action. Producers: Dale N. Le Fevre and Martin von Mallinckrodt. Director: Martin von Mallinckrodt. Narrator: Sylvia Kozak-Budd. Produced by and available from New Games. Copyright 1992. 20 min. Color. Stereo. Also available in PAL and SECAM. $29.95, home use. Guide. AUDIENCE: Primary to Adult This video gives demonstrations of games for children (and adults who feel competitive) to play outdoors along with instructions about their construction. Some are familiar, such as stilts and pick-up-sticks; others are unusual and a bit more complicated to build, such as the "Wandering A," an A-shaped wooden platform that has stilts fastened at the top with six ropes extending to a circle of friends who keep the A from toppling. The combination of video and its accompanying brochure will make it possible for someone with minimal carpentry skills to assemble what is needed; many of the materials can be recycled wood, rope, and bolts. For a library with videos for recreation, this is a natural. The dozen games start out with the "bag bounce," two kids standing on a board a foot off the ground swinging sacks of straw at each other as they try to knock the other off. Other games include a "scooter board" made from a plywood platform on casters with an old tire to sit in, and a "tumble box" made from a large cardboard box without top and bottom, allowing a child to roll down a slope inside it. There are ingenious and inexpensive games here for any number of locations and ages. The taping was done in Germany where the producers gathered a large group to try the games. The narration is English, but voice-overs are not timed to the picture; the whole soundtrack is flawed because of high background noise, possibly because of a problem with automatic volume control. The technical aspects of the tape label it as amateur, but the message comes across and the viewer easily focuses on the goal of having fun in groups or as individuals choosing, building, and playing these outdoor games. -Edward A.
